Brooklyn International Film Festival 2003
at The Brooklyn Museum of Art

6th Annual Brooklyn International Film Festival: Partial line-up announced.

Brooklyn, New York (April 3, 2003) - The Brooklyn International Film Festival (BIFF) announced the partial line-up for this year's program today.

"This year we received an overwhelming response to our call for entries - 1,600 films were submitted from 74 countries. The general quality of this group of entries is particularly high and we are still deliberating on the final cut," said Ursino, BIFF Director. "There are, however, a number of films that are clearly part of our program: ranging from American comedies to backyard wrestling to edgy European dramas. The final line-up will be announced next week," added Ursino.

Highlights of this year's preliminary program include:
Crooked Lines - feature - Dir: Harry O'Reilly - US
North Cape - feature - Dir: Carlo Luglio - Italy
Under the Stars - feature - Dir: Christos Georgiou - Cyprus
All Hell Let Loose - feature - Dir: Susan Taslimi - Sweden
Backyard - documentary - Dir: Paul Hough - US

Although BIFF presents several world premieres, many of the European films have previously been shown at major European festivals including the Venice and Berlin Film Festivals. Some of the films have already a European distribution deal and are looking to enter the American market. Asian, Australian, and South American submissions have snowballed since 2001, which will be reflected in the program.

International films make up a large portion of the program; however, BIFF will screen more American features than ever before, including Brooklyn/NYC-based productions' premieres. BIFF also promotes its American films abroad by contacting foreign distribution companies and festivals as well as organizing a tour of festival's winners overseas.

Although BIFF's main program takes place April 28-May 4 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (with additional screenings at BAM Rose Cinemas), BIFF is giving a sneak peak at its past festivals' winners as part of BMA's "First Saturdays" program - free to the public. BIFF also plans to showcase films in more of Brooklyn's neighborhoods as part of the "Best of Fest" tour this summer and fall. "We want to share these great films with our community as well as put Brooklyn on the map for its cultural prowess locally, nationally, and internationally," said Ursino.
